Ben Ward works on observations and mathematical models to understand how the variability of body characteristics (such as size and nutrition) leads to the development of clearly organized communities in which each organism has a defined place and function (its ecological niche).

He is mainly interested in plankton size, mixotrophy, diazotrophy and the complexity of the trophic network. Understanding how marine communities are organized is important, due to microscopic biological transformations add to main changes in the chemical composition of the ocean and atmosphere and play a huge role in the modulation of the global climate.
